Short answer: No. Deleting an app from your phone does not cancel its subscription. The subscription is tied to your Apple Account, Google Account or the service’s own account, and it keeps renewing until you cancel it there.
Why deleting isn’t enough
When you subscribe, the billing agreement is with your account, not with the app on your phone: your Apple Account for App Store purchases, your Google Account for Google Play, or your account with the service if you subscribed on its website. The app is just a way to access the service. Deleting it, resetting your phone or switching to a new phone doesn’t stop the payments.
Google Play Help states this explicitly: uninstalling the app won’t cancel your subscription.
Where to cancel instead
| Where you subscribed | Where to cancel |
|---|---|
| iPhone / App Store | Settings → your name → Subscriptions (step-by-step guide) |
| Android / Google Play | Play Store → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions (step-by-step guide) |
| Service’s website | Account settings → membership / subscription on that website |
| Phone bill | Your carrier’s app or customer support |
Deleted the app during a free trial?
This is the most common mistake. The trial keeps running after the app is gone and can turn into a paid subscription when it ends. Cancel it using the methods above before it expires. Apple recommends cancelling at least 24 hours before a trial ends. More tips in how to avoid free trial charges.
How to confirm it’s cancelled
- On iPhone, the subscription shows an expiration date and the Cancel button disappears.
- On Google Play, the subscription is listed as cancelled with the date your access ends.
- You’ll usually receive a confirmation email; keep it.
Keep a list before you delete
Forgetting which apps have an active subscription is what leads to this mistake in the first place. With the Leakpin subscription tracker app you can keep your subscriptions, renewal dates and trial end dates in one list and get reminded before payments. Note that deleting a record in Leakpin doesn’t cancel the subscription either; cancellation always happens in the relevant store or service.
Frequently asked questions
Does resetting my phone cancel subscriptions?
No. Subscriptions are tied to your account, so resetting or replacing your phone doesn’t stop billing.
What if the app is removed from the store?
Google Play says that if an app with your subscription is removed from Play, your future subscription is cancelled. Checking your subscription list is still the safest way to confirm.
